Controls/Software Engineer

The current position is for an experienced Controls/Software Engineer, who will be responsible for the detail design of our machine’s control systems. This will be achieved by working with the customer, our commercial department, and the mechanical design team.

Xtrutech use state of the art control systems for our machinery. Most of the systems are based on Siemens hardware. We use networked control systems with remote IO and internet communication modules. This enables worldwide connection to our installed machinery, in preparation for the 4th generation of industrial equipment.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following skills and attributes:

  • PLC/HMI/VSD: TIA Portal (S7 1200/Comfort/G120)
  • Control Networks: ProfiNET, RS-485, RS-232, IO-Link
  • Write PLC and HMI code object-oriented, documented, and easy to maintain.
  • Familiar with the IEC 61131-3 (LD, FB, ST and SFC)
  • Software validation & simulation.
  • Creation of Software Design Specifications (SDS)
  • Creation of Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
  • Setup and commissioning of drives and associated systems & software interfaces
  • Write PLC and HMI code from scratch for manual & automatic machines.
  • Circuit design & specifications & the creation of BOM’s
  • Project administration planning skills.
  • Will at times be required to work outside of their normal working hours
  • 18th Edition Wiring or equivalent
  • Be able to produce Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and accompanying testing documentation
  • Approval of wiring diagrams / control panels
  • Report to the Engineering Manager

Beneficial skills:

  • Experience with Allen Bradley (Compact Logix) and Factory Talk.
  • Siemens S7 Failsafe PLC
  • Knowledge OPC, ASI-bus and distributed I/O systems.
  • Awareness of LabVIEW knowledge & programming skills
  • Awareness of common software languages, such as scripting and VB, C/C++
  • Awareness of SCADA systems.
  • Educated to minimum Degree level in Controls/Software Engineering.

(HNC applicants may be considered dependent on experience)

  • Experience in electrical systems design with AutoCAD, report, and specification writing.
  • Experience with Siemens, Omron and Allen Bradley PLC systems and large inverter drives is preferred.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment for machinery controls and their safety systems.
  • Office 365 literate.
  • Health and Safety qualification is desirable.
  • Full UK driving license

Spare Parts Specialist

Xtrutech design and manufacture Twin Screw Extruders and ancillary equipment. We are also a leading, independent supplier of OEM spare parts that we ship across the globe. We are looking for a Spare Parts Specialist to manage this area of the business. The ideal candidate will be familiar with process machinery and our related industries. An educational background in engineering would be beneficial. Have previous customer service and sales experience, with an analytical mindset- capable of creating forecasts, reports, and business strategies. Excellent organisational skills are essential for this role, to ensure that pricing, maintenance, and delivery are all completed successfully.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following skills and attributes:

  • Assisting the Regional Sales Managers in achieving the company budget for given regions for spare parts
  • Liaise with Sales team to establish market needs
  • Understand and implement the 6 marketing P’s (Product, Price, Promotion, Place, People & Process) to develop a marketing plan for our spare parts business
  • Analysis of costs and market pricing to achieve best margins/sales
  • Creating price books – Costs/Sell pricing
  • Manage stock levels and re-order levels according to market needs
  • Create quotations for spare parts as and when required
  • Within a 6 – 12 month period, gain a deep/detailed understanding of our spares business to create a business strategy to present to the board
  • Evaluate Spare Parts on-time delivery schedule with the procurement team
  • Updating Salesforce on a regular basis by means of logging data, follow ups and forecasts.
  • Planning and maintaining work systems, procedures, and policies that enable and encourage the optimum performance

Mechanical Design Engineer

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following skills and attributes:

  • Designing and implementing cost-effective equipment modifications to help improve safety and reliability.
  • Developing a project specification with colleagues, often including those from other engineering disciplines.
  • Developing, testing, and evaluating theoretical designs.
  • Discussing and solving complex problems with manufacturing departments, sub-contractors, suppliers, and customers
  • Making sure a product can be made reliably and will perform consistently in specified operating environments.
  • Managing projects using engineering principles and techniques.
  • Producing details of specifications and outline designs
  • Using research, analytical, conceptual, and planning skills, particularly mathematical modelling and 2D/3D and SolidWorks computer-aided design.
  • Considering the implications of issues such as cost, safety, and time constraints.
  • Ensure materials selected in the design operation are readily available for all activities, considering the cost of procurement a major priority.
  • Ensure drawings are recorded using the Xtrutech numbering system and all drawings are accessible via ‘the vault’.
  • Comply and assist the Company 5S Monthly Presentation Audit for housekeeping.
  • Liaise with customers with occasional site visits, ensuring a professional image is always portrayed.
  • Demonstrate good use of mechanical design principles and be highly competent with the use of 2D & 3D Design Software.
  • Show calculations for design related issues and the considerations taken when designing equipment.
  • Have an understanding and appreciation of Process & Instrumentation Drawings (P & IDs).
  • Evaluate and optimise concepts for mechanical function and manufacturability.
  • Will determine/ implement design approaches and parameters. Conduct feasibility studies on new designs. Will analyse equipment to establish operating data, conduct experimental tests and evaluate the results. Lead and/or participate in design and review meetings.
  • Will select components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and comply with EC standards for machinery safety.
  • Communicate with suppliers and advanced operations to resolve issues and optimise design for manufacturability and efficiency. Will ensure designs are cost efficient, optimising performance and ease of manufacture with reliability.
  • To adhere to and maintain the Company Quality policy to IS09001:2015 and to comply with all documentation and systems.
  • Continually look for ways (and report) to improve productivity and efficiency of the design process.
  • To adhere to and maintain the Company Health and Safety policy and to comply with the health and safety at Work Act 1974 and all current Health and safety legislation.
  • To attend appropriate training, as and when requested.

Key Skills:

  • Engineering Degree/HNC Mechanical minimum/Design Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years in machinery design or mechanical design experience in a fast paced high technology environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – able to express ideas and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Open minded- able to recognise good ideas.
  • Innovative thinker – able to envision new and better solutions.
  • Good instincts and sound judgment for mechanical and structural design.
  • Excellent analytical skills, ability to plan, organise, and implement multiple concurrent tasks. Good working knowledge of CAD/CAM/CAE computer systems, engineering materials and design, coating technologies and advanced manufacturing technologies.
